These are the books that I have found to be the most helpful to me as a writer and as a teacher of writing. I hope that you find them as wonderful and inspirational as I have!
Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott
My favorite book on the art of writing: funny, true, and so helpful for parents and students who wish to take writing to the next level. CAVEAT: Lamott, though a Christian, uses language one is not accustomed to reading in a book on writing: Readers Beware.
Becoming a Writer by Dorothea Brande
A classic book on writing first published in 1934, this little book by a creative writing professor encourages fledgling (and even more experienced) writers in developing creativity in writing through her sound, practical, and inspirational approach to “Becoming a Writer.” A charming gem of a book. highly recommended for students who desire to become writers.
The Writer’s Jungle by Julie Bogart
Based on Julie’s The Writer's Jungle Online (formerly Kidswrite Basic) course at Brave Writer, this is the best book on teaching writing to students from age ten through late junior high/early high school. Julie teaches parents to be the best encouragers of their students, teaching them to write from the heart and develop their individual writing voice. My favorite book on teaching writing, period.
Help for High School by Julie Bogart
Based on Brave Writer’s Expository Essay course, this book speaks directly to the high school student, teaching them the thought processes and writing strategies behind the writing of expository essays.
The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Grammar and Style, 2nd Edition by Laurie E. Rozakis, Ph.D.
A fun and extremely informative guide to grammar and style for high school students. Explains the elements of grammar and includes exercises. A must-read book for all high school writers.
MLA Handbook, 8th Edition by The Modern Language Association
Updated in 2016 with sweeping changes that will bring the MLA format well into the 21st century, this is a complete college-level guide to writing the MLA research paper and is the basis for my teaching of the MLA Research Essay course at Brave Writer.
Easy Grammar: Plus by Wanda C. Phillips, Ed.D.
The one grammar workbook I recommend for late junior high to early high school. Covers everything needed for a lifetime of grammar knowledge and usage.
The Brave Learner by Julie Bogart
And this one is the heart of Brave Writer as it goes far beyond the teaching of writing to the learning of our children whether homeschooled or schooled traditionally.
Have fun perusing these gems!
